Andrew Balbirnie has resigned as captain of Ireland’s men’s cricket team following the team’s failure to qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023. Cricket Ireland (CI) announced the news on Tuesday, July 4. With only one victory in four group games, Ireland was unable to advance to the Super Sixes round of the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe.
Balbirnie took over as captain in 2019 and has led Ireland in 89 matches across all formats, including four Tests, 33 One-Day Internationals, and 52 Twenty20 Internationals. The 32-year-old led Ireland to a captivating two-wicket win over Nepal in his final match as captain before informing his fellow players of his decision to step down.
Balbirnie, according to Cricket Live Score, expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure and stated that he felt it was the right time for both himself and the team. He also promised to keep giving his all to the team and contribute to their future success.
Following the resignation of Balbirnie, veteran batter Paul Stirling has been named interim captain. Stirling has previously served as captain 13 times and will continue to lead the team until a permanent captain is named.
