The Australian side has continued to inch closer towards the semi-finals of the Under-19 World Cup, courtesy of two Brisbane Grammar School old boys who combined to help the team achieve an emphatic victory over England in Kimberley.
Diamonds, conforming to local tradition, were at the Diamond Oval in South Africa’s old mining centre, where Hugh Weibgen, their captain, smashed a century of splendour while Callum Vidler took four wickets during a whirlwind opening spell as they blew away their young English counterparts with gems of performance.
The Aussies even got the better of the thundery weather on Wednesday, as they went on to register a 110-run win under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in one that was an all-time rain-reduced contest and thereby maintained their 100 percent record in the tournament.
It has made Weibgen’s side near certainties to book a semi-final place, with their Super Six group leading, having won three matches from as many as played with the clear advantage in terms of net run rate at 2.78. Captain, 19 years of age, was the star of the day, and his batting performance has just eclipsed the status that had been accorded to him after he looked so accomplished with the bat throughout the tournament.
