Bangladesh ODI Captain Tamim Iqbal Announces Shock Retirement From International Cricket

Tamim Iqbal announces retirement from international cricket

Tamim Iqbal, the captain of Bangladesh’s one-day team, announced his retirement from international cricket on Thursday (July 6), abruptly ending a 16-year career at the top level. Due to a stiff back, the veteran batter missed the lone Test against Afghanistan last month but was available for the ODI series. He played in the opening ODI on Wednesday, but he has since announced his retirement with immediate effect. This significant choice is made just three months before the India ODI World Cup. In the 50-over format, Litton Das serves as Tamim’s backup; however, it is unclear whether he will take over for the ODIs after leading in the lone Test against Afghanistan, reports Cricket Live Score.

“This is the end of the road for me. I gave it my all. I am permanently retiring from international cricket with immediate effect,” he said in a tearful press conference. “I’d like to thank all of my teammates, coaches, BCB officials, family members, and those who have supported me throughout this long journey.” They believed in me. I’d also like to thank the audience. Your love and trust in me inspired me to do my absolute best for Bangladesh. I want to request your prayers for the next chapter of my life. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers,” he added.

Last year, Iqbal announced his retirement from T20 Internationals. He is one of Bangladesh’s best openers, having scored 5083 runs in Tests and 8313 runs in ODIs.
