Prior to the team’s title defence in India in October, England’s Test captain Ben Stokes decided to change his mind and is now a member of the men’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand.
“Any series against New Zealand is closely fought and will give us the perfect opportunity to test ourselves against one of the best teams in the world,” said Luke Wright, a member of the England men’s national selection committee. “The return of Ben Stokes, with his ability to win matches and leadership, only strengthens that quality. Every fan will appreciate seeing him in an England ODI shirt once more, I’m sure of it.”
Because the captain of the team that won the 2019 World Cup was back, Harry Brook was left off the roster. Due to the recurrence of his injury, pacer Jofra Archer was also left off. According to England coach Matthew Mott, the Test team captain was willing to play in ODIs as just a pure batter, who recently revealed his desire to persuade him to come out of retirement, reports Cricket Live Score.
In order to be fit for the Test series against India in early 2024, he reiterated his intentions to stay retired from the 50-over format as recently as the days following the Ashes. The internationals began play in July 2022. Stokes missed the majority of the Indian Premier League season due to a knee injury he sustained while visiting New Zealand in February.
