The comparison between the temporary ground near New York for the men’s T20 World Cup and South Africa’s Wanderers Stadium speaks volumes. Despite Wanderers being the biggest cricket stadium in South Africa, the New York venue accommodates more spectators. This observation underscores a sobering reality about South Africa’s standing in global cricket events.
Similarly, teams like Ireland, the Netherlands, and Canada, participating alongside South Africa in Nassau County, face the challenge of drawing large crowds unless playing against cricket giants like India and Pakistan. The provision for 34,000 fans for the India-Pakistan clash emphasizes their massive following, reports Cricket Live Score.
In terms of past achievements, South Africa finds itself in a less distinguished position among the competing teams. Only India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka have secured victories in senior men’s World Cups, be it T20 or ODI. In contrast, teams like Bangladesh, despite having larger grounds, have yet to lift a World Cup trophy, having reached only one global knockout game.
For South Africans passionate about cricket, it’s a bitter pill to swallow to be compared to teams traditionally labeled as “minnows” in global events. The disparity in stadium capacities between cricket, rugby, and football venues in South Africa raises questions about the sport’s popularity in the country.
Despite South Africa’s underwhelming record in senior cricket World Cups, there’s a glimmer of hope in the country’s under-19 cricket success in 2014. Perhaps lessons from that triumph could be applied to the senior team’s current endeavors, as they strive to reclaim past glory in the coming days.
