Discussions has been raised over format of Champions Trophy

At a meeting last month at the Dubai headquarters of the International Cricket Council (ICC), discussions were held regarding the future of the Champions Trophy. The gathering included top ICC officials and representatives from the stakeholders of the world governing body, including broadcaster Disney Star, reports Cricket Live Score.

While some members of the ICC argued for maintaining the ODI format, no final decision was made, as the advantages and disadvantages of both 50-over and 20-over formats were thoroughly examined. Key data presented at the meeting revealed that engagement and overall viewership for ODIs have declined by more than 20 percent since the World Cup 2019.

Broadcasters, who finance global cricket, can monetize more advertising slots in a 100-over game than in a 40-over match. However, it is unlikely that all the ad slots will be sold for an ODI, and the cost of a commercial spot for a one-dayer is much less than that for the shortest format.

Currently, the rate for a 10-second spot during IPL matches is around Rs 15 lakh. In financial terms, for every INR 100 earned per over in a T20 game, broadcasters earn INR 57-60 in an ODI. Nevertheless, the T20 format offers around 100 commercials per match, while an ODI can accommodate 160 ads, so the overall monetization opportunity in an ODI remains higher if all slots are sold.

The arguments in favor of the ODI format highlight last year’s World Cup’s huge success, primarily due to its location in India and the Indian team’s extraordinary performance. It’s also noted that the Champions Trophy, scheduled for mid-February to early March 2025 in Pakistan, is linked to the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
