Gale joins Cricket Tasmania 2 years after Yorkshire racism scandal

Andrew Gale has been recruited to his first professional cricket job since being fired by Yorkshire. He will relocate to Australia to lead Cricket Tasmania’s male performance route.

Gale guided Yorkshire to the Championship title in 2014 and 2015 before taking over as head coach from 2016 to 21. He was one of 16 club employees fired in December 2021 in response to Azeem Rafiq’s charges of institutional racism and his participation at a DCMS hearing, reports Live Cricket Score.

Gale was accused by Rafiq of bullying and using racist language towards him. He refused to defend himself against charges that he had brought the game into disrepute, describing the Cricket Discipline Commission’s investigation as a “tainted process”. In a lengthy Facebook statement, Gale claimed he had moved on from cricket and was starting a joinery business in Yorkshire with his cousin.

He was later handed a four-week ban from coaching and a fine of £6,000. Last year, he agreed compensation with Yorkshire after winning a case for unfair dismissal. The Daily Mail reported that his settlement was worth a six-figure sum.
