Due to a minor ankle injury, Australian star Glenn Maxwell will not play in the upcoming T20 series against South Africa. Maxwell underwent a minor aggravation to his left ankle during the team’s first training session in Durban, Cricket Australia confirmed on Monday afternoon. The 34-year-old Victorian was already anticipated to miss the ODI series against South Africa for paternity leave after being sidelined for several months last summer after breaking his fibula, reports Cricket Live Score.
For the remainder of the T20 tour, Australia will now be without Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Cameron Green, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, David Warner, and Maxwell.
National selector Tony Dodemaide explained in a statement, “We are taking a precautionary approach given Glenn was heading home next week in any case. In order for Glenn to be available for the three-match ODI series in India leading up to the World Cup, “We will monitor Glenn’s recovery.”
Matthew Wade has been named to Australia’s T20 squad in place of Maxwell and will join the touring party ahead of Wednesday’s first match at Kingsmead. The 35-year-old, who has played 75 T20Is for Australia since his debut in 2011, was a member of the winning T20 World Cup squad in 2021. He captained Australia in its most recent Twenty20 International match, a four-run win over Afghanistan in Adelaide.
