Joe Root scores double century against Sri Lanka

Joe Root marks a new record with a second highest test score of 228 on Saturday. He was dismissed before being the last wicket to fall just before the interval, after scoring a double century while managing more than half his side’s runs.

His timely recorded a fourth test double-century, propelling his side to 421 all out on the stroke of lunch on day three of the first test against Sri Lanka in Galle. This allowed a lead of 286 for England.

Joe Root was caught on the mid-on boundary off spinner Dilruwan Perera (4-109). Root expressed frustration at recently failing to convert fifties into hundreds. He scored 226 in New Zealand in November 2019 being the most recent previous three-figure score in test cricket.

He had no test hundred the last year which was the first in his test career. England resumed the third morning on 320 for four as Root and Jos Buttler (30) scored 52 runs in quick time before Sri Lanka finally received a bit of luck.
