Kent's Billings steps down as captain

Sam Billings has resigned as the club’s men’s captain after six years in the position, Kent Cricket can confirm. The 32-year-old declared his intention to concentrate on improving his game going into the 2024 season and beyond in a heartfelt message to the Club’s Members and supporters present at the 2023 Spitfire Kent Cricket Awards, reports Live Cricket Score.

The England international and product of the Kent Cricket Academy was named the Club’s 35th Captain in January 2018. During his tenure as captain, the men’s team won the Vitality Blast in 2021, was promoted to Division One of the County Championship, and reached a One Day Cup Final in his first season in 2018.

After agreeing to extend his contract in the winter of 2018, Billings will play for Kent until at least the end of the 2025 season.

Billings said after relinquishing the position of captain, “It has been an incredible honour to captain this great Club. It has been truly special to follow in the footsteps of so many wonderful captains throughout the years. I want to think that I’ve improved the Club and raised the bar. Paul Downton deserves special recognition for his unwavering support and guidance throughout. One of my personal career high points was winning the Vitality Blast trophy on Finals Day at Edgbaston in 2021. I appreciate your support throughout, Members, staff, and most importantly, players. In 2024, I’ll see you all again at The Spitfire Ground.”
