Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, has been given two weeks to prove his fitness for the 2018 ODI World Cup in India. Williamson has been out since April after tearing his ACL in the Indian Premier League. He has since undergone surgery and is recovering in New Zealand.
Cricket Live Score reports that Williamson was seen in the nets and is on the mend. Williamson travelled to England with the New Zealand team for a series of T20Is and ODIs. He will be allowed an additional two weeks to train and show his fitness. New Zealand coach Gary Stead said the squad is “still hoping” that Williamson will be able to play in the World Cup, but there is no certainty.
“We’ll give him every chance we can. He makes the most of his time in full recovery mode. He’s back batting in the nets, which is fantastic news. So he’s doing extremely well, but there’s still a lot of work for him to do to get to where we need him to be,” Gary explained.
If Kane Williamson is unable to play in the World Cup, Tom Latham may take over as captain. Latham has been in excellent form in recent months and is an accomplished leader. On October 25, New Zealand will kick up their World Cup campaign against England. The competition will take place in India from October 5 to November 19.
