Smith replaces Warner as Australia test opener

Although the selection panel selected Matt Renshaw to replace the outgoing David Warner in the Test squad for the game against the West Indies, Smith was given the nod to play at the top. As a result, Renshaw will only be a reserve batsman, with Bailey also confirming the inclusion of Cameron Green in the playing XI. The all-rounder boasts an excellent record in first-class cricket at No. 4 and is ready to bat at the same Test-level position, reports Live Cricket Score.

Despite an average score of over 60 at No. 3 and No.4, Smith had recently expressed his desire to move up the rankings following Warner’s retirement. Although captain Pat Cummins had no interest in reshuffling the batting order, Smith found support from players such as teammate Marnus Labuschagne and former captain Michael Clarke.

“Steve is obviously motivated, full of energy and full of drive,” Bailey said. “Many team members were willing to come forward and say they weren’t interested. So it was reassuring when Steve showed up and said he liked it, and that’s exactly what we did. We, as the selection committee, also chatted with the coaches in the background.”
